How To Organise Your Home For Spring

Spring is officially here, and we are excited to get back outdoors, enjoy entertaining at home and open the windows to let the fresh air flow throughout the house. If, like us, you get an urge at this time of year to have a clean slate and a fresh start then this post is for you. If you’ve been feeling like your home is overwhelming and in need of a declutter and organise with the changing of the season, then we have got you covered.

Step 1 – Take Inventory & Make A Plan

One of the main reasons we do not stick to a task and often abandon ship halfway through is because we do not have a clear intention or plan. We recommend starting your Spring clean and organise process by conducting an audit of your entire home and creating a plan. This doesn’t need to be complicated or take a long time, simply start at your entryway and walk through room by room jotting down which cupboards need attention, what areas are a priority and which zones need organising. Once you have your list together, categorise in order of priority so you have a clear direction for where to begin.

Step 2 – Finding The Time

Now that you have your list together and know exactly which spaces in your home need attention, you can simply get started. In order for this task to feel less daunting, we suggest categorising your areas into size to determine how long each space will take. This allows you to time manage when you will be able to fit in a declutter and organise of each space. For example, we suggest leaving the larger spaces such as the garage to the weekend where you can schedule in a few hours, whereas the entryway console table could be done in half an hour one evening whilst listening to a podcast.

Step 3 – Decluttering

The first step in any organisation process is to sort through your items and declutter. We suggest creating three piles including ‘Keep’, ‘Donate’ and ‘Throw Away’ and start by sorting items into their relevant category. We recommend having items such as bin bags, cloths, disinfectant and scissors on hand to make for a seamless process. When decluttering your items, it is helpful to ask yourself questions similar to ‘Have I used this in the past 12 months’, ‘Can I see myself using this in the future’ and ‘Is there an alternative such as uploading this document to a hard drive, finding the manual online etc.” If you find this process challenging, then check out our decluttering services where we can assist you with this process and provide the helping hand you need.

Step 4 – Storage Solutions

Now that you have completed the most challenging step of ‘decluttering’, it is time for the fun to begin. Step 3 must be completed before moving onto purchasing storage solutions as you need to know what items are remaining that require organising. We suggest starting by heading to Pinterest to look at some home organisation inspo and seeing what kind of style storage solutions you like best. Do you love an all-white look, are you a fan of acrylic containers or do you absolutely love beautiful wicker baskets? Next up, it’s time to measure the spaces you are requiring storage solutions for (ensure you measure all heights, depths and widths). Then, you can go shopping for the right containers, baskets, boxes and drawer dividers you need. Check out our previous blogpost “Our Top 5 products to use as home organisers” for some helpful tips.
