Tips For Decluttering Your Home In 2025
2025 brings a fresh new energy and a renewed enthusiasm for decluttering and organising your home. Along with this comes the overwhelm of not knowing where to begin and what process to follow. Today we are sharing with you our process for decluttering that we use in our client’s homes to help them declutter and organise their spaces.
Tip 1: Asses Your Spaces & Create A Plan
Decluttering and organising can seem overwhelming when you are looking at your entire house as a whole, but when broken down by room and area, things seem a bit easier to digest. When starting your decluttering journey, we recommend grabbing a pen and paper (or iPhone notes) and taking a walk through your home and assessing each space. Begin to write a list of each area and space that needs decluttering so you have the satisfaction of ticking things off one at a time and can clearly see what needs work. We recommend breaking things down by space, area or cupboard. For example, your list could include “entryway baskets, kitchen cupboards, playroom, wardrobe, linen closet etc.” Once you have compiled your list you can move onto tip 2!
Tip 2: Dedicate the time
Now that you have your list of the areas in your home that need a thorough declutter, it is time to work out when you actually have the time to do it! We suggest adding it to your calendar as a non-negotiable task, perhaps every Sunday afternoon (wine optional) or every Tuesday night until the spaces are complete. Studies have shown that when you add tasks to a calendar instead of simply putting them on a to-do list, you are far more likely to commit to completing the activity. However, if finding the time to declutter all the spaces in your home is impossible Organised Simplicity are here to help! We know that everyone leads busy lives and the last thing you’d like to do on your weekend is spend it decluttering – check out our decluttering service to call in the experts.
Tip 3: Take Everything Out Of The Area
The first step when it comes to physically decluttering a space is to take every item out and place it on a nearby table or floor area. This allows you to see the space you are working with and clean the area, so it is fresh and ready for organising. This step also gives you the mental clarity to really think about each item you are returning to the space and ensure you are happy with keeping it. Often laying all our items out in one (often huge) pile allows us to see the sheer amount of ‘stuff’ that was being stored and reminds us why donating and getting rid of items is essential to allow for more space both physically and mentally.
Tip 4: Keep, Donate or Throw Away
The decluttering process is now as simple as picking up each item and asking yourself do I want to ‘Keep, donate or throw it away’? As you work through each item, create piles and ensure you dispose of and donate things as soon as possible so the entire decluttering process has been ticked off as a whole. We have worked with countless clients through our decluttering service and know that this step can be tricky to navigate mentally.
