Small Space Organisation Secrets

Guest blog by Eliza

Living in small spaces is part of modern life for most people as we find ourselves opting for apartments, townhouses or smaller homes. As such, these usually result in limited storage cupboards and smaller bathrooms and kitchens and require us to be a bit more creative with home organisation. Today we are sharing with you our top tips for storage solutions and home organisation when it comes to small spaces.

Categorise Everything

The key to having a functional and organised home when dealing not only with a small space, but homes in general is to categorise everything. This involves grouping like-minded items together in designated zones that allow for ease and flow in your everyday life. This can be as simple as categorising and labelling your pantry into groups such as snacks, cooking and baking to ensure everything is put back in place. In small spaces it can be easy to shove things in cupboards or places where they fit and not take into consideration their use in your daily routines. By categorising items together and placing them in zones that make sense ensures things are put back in their place and avoids clutter building up over time.

Baskets Are Your Best Friend

Baskets are a tool we recommend throughout all our organisation projects as they are versatile and work in almost any room of the house. They allow you to easily categorise items in spaces such as the wardrobe, kid’s playrooms, kitchens and living rooms. To ensure you maximise your storage space we suggest always measuring the depth, width and height of the area first and purchasing baskets that fill the space to maximum capacity.  Baskets are also great for popping in the corners of living rooms to store blankets and cushions and playrooms for an easy tidy-up method.

 Multi-Purpose Furniture

When purchasing furniture for spaces that are lacking in size, we recommend choosing multi-purpose furniture where possible. This means that the furniture piece not only serves its intended purpose but has built-in or added storage. For example, opting for a bed that has drawers or a gas lift to store seasonal clothes or linen. We also suggest selecting bedside tables, coffee tables and console tables that have built-in drawers and cupboards for extra storage opportunities.

Make Use Of Height

Making use of height is a great and often underestimated way to maximise storage and organisational opportunities in small spaces. Try adding floating shelves to the kitchen to store cookbooks or in the bathroom to store excess toilet paper hidden in beautiful small baskets. When purchasing items such as bookshelves, it is always best to select as tall as possible to ensure you can maximise the storage space. Another tip is to hang hooks in different areas of the home to store items such as school backpacks, hats, handbags, dog leads or robes.

Label, Label & Label

Following on from our tips mentioned above regarding categorising, the next step is to label. Labelling each category or zone allows each member of the family to put things back where they came from and ensures every item has a home. We love using swing tag labels for baskets in areas such as wardrobes, playrooms, children’s rooms and pantries. Labelling storage containers in the kitchen, laundry and garage can also be a huge help in avoiding clutter build-up and creates organised and functional spaces.
